Year 11 English: Week Three

27 04 2010

As most of your probably noticed, we missed our class on Monday because of the public holiday.

On Wednesday, we will finished reading the story Scission and you will write a story of your own. This time, you will write it in segments and put them out of order. Following this, you will start your assessment task in response to Scission. You will complete this task over three weeks in class.

I am not going to post the assignment here. You’ll have to come to class for this one.

On Thursday, we will continue with our work on the Scission response.

A Very Descript Man

I am such a dolent man,

I eptly work each day;

My acts are all becilic,

I’ve just ane things to say.

My nerves are strung, my hair is kempt,

I’m gusting and I’m span:

I look with dain on everyone

And am a pudent man.

I travel cognito and make

A delible impression:

I overcome a slight chalance,

With gruntled self-possesion.

My dignation would be great

If I should digent be:

I trust my vagance will bring

An astrous life for me.”

Morphing English: Esperanto Resources

20 04 2010

You might find these resources useful as you translate your stories into Esperanto.

Remember, these tools will not do all of the translation for you. You still need to know the rules of Esperanto, otherwise you will produce nonsense.

The Audient is Listening

18 04 2010

One of my students (let’s call him Michael) asked last week how many people have ever looked at Red Space Rocket. I wasn’t sure off the top of my head, but this blog has been around since I started teaching (a little over three years now) so I figured that it would be in the thousands. As it turned out, I was close. The answer is thirty-two-thousand.

I suspect that most of the people who come here to Red Space Rocket are not students, but other teachers. What gives it away is the search terms that they use. It is mostly things like “Great Depression assignment”, ‘Saving Francesca themes” or “Macbeth essay questions”.

Anyhow, just now I was wondering if any of my current student do stop by Red Space Rocket in a given week. So I thought I’d conduct a small test by way of this challenge.

For this week only, the first student to deliver the quotation below – in full, in class, and from memory – will be summarily awarded two large chocolate frog. The person who does this second gets nothing. This seems fair to me.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former – Albert Einstein.

Now all of this might amount to nothing. There might be none of my students reading, just those other teachers looking for assignments. But I’ll be interested to find out.

Morphing English: Term Two, Week Two

18 04 2010

Monday: you don’t have class with me. Breath easily.

Tuesday: We have a double session in the computer room for you to work on your children’s stories in both Esperanto and English. You will also have that same double session next week. After that, this work is due and I expect it to be of a high quality.

Wednesday: see Monday.

Thursday: You will be translating my Esperanto story – which I need to get around to writing – into English. This assessment task will be completed under test conditions.

Friday: We will be watching a documentary called The Sounds of Aus and answering some questions about it. We might also look at the samples we collected of ourselves speaking variations of Australian English.

Power of English: Term Two, Week Two

18 04 2010

On Monday after recess, we will start work on our next unit, Rhetorical Techniques. If you happen to miss my class, you can view the presentation online here. We won’t get through all of the presentation this week, but you should try to understand the first twelve slides, at least.

On Tuesday, we will continue this same work.

On Wednesday, when we can finally get into a computer room, you will type up your essays in response to Burning Eddy. I have made corrections and comments on your drafts and will return these on Monday.

And that’s it for the second week of term.

Year 11 English: Term Two, Week Two

18 04 2010

Our double session of English on Monday morning will be devoted to our MIPS planning rather than English. All the same, you should turn up to Q02 at the start of the day, because I’ll be taking you to the MIPS session.

On Wednesday, you will be presenting your analysis of a story from Tin Winton’s collection Scission.

You will need to hand in your written answers to me. In addition, you will present a three-minute talk. This talk will be based on your analysis. You can also use some of the three minutes to do a reading of part of your chosen story.

You can either present your talk to the class live, or you can record it on your phone and Bluetooth me the file. Either is fine with me, but I do need this talk completed this week.

Once we have finished the talks, we will start reading and considering the eponymous story from this collection. I expect that we will we doing this on Thursday, also.

Esperanto Words We Found Today

13 04 2010

to go – iri

mother- patrino
father – patro

brother – frato
sister – fratino

uncle – onklo
aunt – onklino

son – filo
daughter – filino

As Molly and I looked these up, we noticed the pattern. I am hoping you work it out just as easily.

Morphing English: Esperanto Resources

13 04 2010

Today in Morphing English, you will be starting your children’s story in Esperanto. This story needs to be at least 100 words long.

If you are working on this outside of class, you will find these resources useful.

We will be working on this task for all sessions this week.

Burning Eddy Planning

13 04 2010

Today, you will plan your Burning Eddy essay using this sheet.

At the end of the session, you will hand it in. I will give you feedback overnight and you can start writing your essay on Wednesday.

Burning Eddy Essay Planning

Week One: Morphing English

11 04 2010

On Tuesday, the fifteen-minute writing topic is “Broken Down”.

After that, you will be writing a two-hundred-word story in English and Esperanto. The first step is to write your story in English. The second is to identify the types of words used. You will need to know what is a noun, verb, conjunction, article and so forth. For the nouns, you will need to clearly state if they are singular or plural, and subject or object. For the verbs, you will need to clearly state what tense it is in.

Only once you have done all of this, you work out how to write your story in Esperanto.

I expect that we will work on this task for the entire week.
