Active and Passive Sentences

Sentences have a structure and different types of words do different things.

The dog chased the cat.
The dog (subject, actor, noun) chased (verb) the cat (object, noun)

If you change the order you change the roles of words and the meaning of the sentence.

The cat chased the dog.
Identify the subject, actor, object and noun.


In an active sentence the subject and actor are the same.

Someone does something.
The cat chased the dog.
The man took the photo.
The girl likes the boy.

In a passive sentence something happens to the subject.
Identify the actor, object and subject in these sentences.
The dog is chased by the cat.
The photo is taken by the man.
The boy is liked by the girl.
