Factors in Germany

Germany had been a nation since 1871.
Had ambitions to have colonies and an empire like France and Britain.
Was building up a navy which was a threat to the British Navy.
The monarch Kaiser Wilhelm III spoke of how he wanted Germany to be a great world power.

The Beginning

On 28th June 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
Franz Ferdinand was heir to the Austrian throne.
He was killed by a Slav nationalist and student called Gavrio Princip.

Moving to war

Austria-Hungary was concerned about Serb and Slav nationalism.
If Serbs and Slavs broke away the Austro-Hungarian empire might crumble.
Austria threatened to attack Serbia unless they agreed to a range of demands.
Serbia agreed to almost all of these demands.
Austria attacked anyway.

Pre-war alliances

Countries had alliances to join each other in wars and defend each other against attack.

Origins of war

There were a number of factors which made war likely at this time.

The Alliance system
When one country got into a fight it automatically brought many other countries in also.

The Arms Race
Countries had large standing armies.
These posed a very serious threat.

An Acceptance of War
War was accepted as a legitimate method of getting what your country wanted.
Nations were very proud of their armies and military histories.

Nationalism
Ordinary people took a fierce pride in their country.
Easily turned into hostility towards other countries.
This idea was reinforced in education, newspapers and literature.

Went from June 1914 to November 1918
Fighting was mostly in Europe
Countries from around the world fought.
20 million people killed.
21 million people wounded.
Changed the face of Europe.
Set the stage for the start of World War Two.

Lithosphere

The earth’s crust.
Parent rocks erodes to form sand.
Different rocks erode at a different rate.
Variations in the rate of erosion cause bays (where sand is deposited) and rocky outcrops which form cliffs.

Atmosphere

Winds, air and sun.
Drives and blows the sand into dunes or away.
Cause waves and erosion of the rock into sand.

A British teacher has designed a school chair that is physically impossible to tip backwards in the hopes of getting pupils to sit still, prevent dangerous accidents and give teachers a quieter life.

As I am sure you can image I’d love twenty-six of these in B23.



Direct and Indirect Speech

Direct speech
Exactly what someone said.

Indirect speech
Information about what they said but not the actual words.

Work out if each one is direct and indirect speech?

“Hello” said Fred.
My brother said it was fine with him.
Mr O’Meara told me to “shut up”.
The doctor said I’d be healthy soon.

Turn direct into indirect.

“There can be only one” declared the guy with the Scottish accent.
“You never can tell with bees” said Winnie the Pooh.
“I should be so lucky” sang Kylie.

Turn indirect into direct.

Mr O’Meara said I could leave class.
My mother told me to eat well.
According to my doctor I eat too much chocolate.



Active and Passive Sentences

Sentences have a structure and different types of words do different things.

The dog chased the cat.
The dog (subject, actor, noun) chased (verb) the cat (object, noun)

If you change the order you change the roles of words and the meaning of the sentence.

The cat chased the dog.
Identify the subject, actor, object and noun.


In an active sentence the subject and actor are the same.

Someone does something.
The cat chased the dog.
The man took the photo.
The girl likes the boy.

In a passive sentence something happens to the subject.
Identify the actor, object and subject in these sentences.
The dog is chased by the cat.
The photo is taken by the man.
The boy is liked by the girl.

Definition

Coast: Where the land meets the ocean.
Usually a 3 or 4 kilometre strip.
Coastal: On, near, or associated with the coast.

Why are coasts important?

Coastal regions are about 15% of the earth’s land surface.
Costal regions have 50% of the world’s population.
3.1b people live within 200km of the sea.
75% of the population will live in these regions by 2025.

Example: Europe

Europe has 89,000 km of coastline.
Almost half of the population now lives within 50 kilometres of the sea.
The coastal zone resources produce much of the Union’s economic wealth.
The fishing, shipping and tourism industries all compete for coastal space.
