I decided to let you characters do some work for once on this blog. Today we watched some clips from Lord of the Rings and Star Wars: A New Hope. The purpose of all of this was to compare three dark heroes (Wolverine, Boromir and Han Solo) and the Old Man Wizards (Charles Xavier, Gandalf and Obi-Wan).
So how about people chip in and leave a comment. What do you think these dark heroes have in common?

Although I am someone who talks a great deal I greatly admire people who can work well with only a few words. As the bard so famously said brevity is the soul of wit. With this in mind I am intrigued by ficlets. These are tiny stories in only 1024 letters (including spaces).
You write a little building block of a story and then you, or someone else, writes a but that either comes before it or after it.
A ficlet is a short story that enables you to collaborate with the world.

This article expressed some concerns about the facts and presentation of the film. It’s well worth having a look at.
As a motion picture, An Inconvenient Truth has a lot to say, but contains little imaginative cinematography that might have made global warming engaging at the suburban cineplex. The picture the movie paints is always worst-case scenario. Considering the multiple times Gore has given his greenhouse slide show (he says “thousands”), it’s jarring that the movie was not scrubbed for factual precision.

A little bit more information about the science in An Inconvenient Truth.
Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and temperatures are rising.

In this scenario there is an earthquake on November 13 2007 which knocks out running water and electricity all over Australia. One year later it has still not been restored.
Your task is to write a 600 word newspaper article about the daily life of a teenager in post-disaster Geelong.
Please do not just solve the problems with a silver bullet. Your job is not to solve the problem but to understand what life is like in this situation.
This task is due on Friday 16 November 2007. Unless their is an earthquake which knocks out the water and power. In that case you can have an extension until Monday.

You’d want to be carved out of chocolate not to notice that Global Warming and Climate Change are becoming significant issues for both believers and skeptics.
THOUSANDS gathered across Australia yesterday to protest against government inaction on climate change — by walking.
But it was no Sunday afternoon walk in the park for the Labor Party’s would-be environment minister, Peter Garrett, who was booed in Sydney.
The minister himself, Malcolm Turnbull, avoided the boos by not turning up, citing Remembrance Day duties.
More than 50 walks were held throughout the country, with as many as 50,000 people walking in Melbourne, 30,000 in Sydney, and tens of thousands taking part in more than 50 cities and towns.

This week we start watching An Inconvenient Truth in Geography. In Geography, like most subjects, it pays to look around for various sources of information to support your thinking. This article talks about a report which seems like a good resource.
CLIMATE change poses a “real and serious threat” to Victoria’s 2000-kilometre coastline, according to a State Government report that warns of an increase in sea levels and widespread destruction of coastal habitats.
The Victorian Coastal Strategy, to be made public today, predicts a bleak future for many coastal towns as they come under stress from climate change and population growth.
The report, by the Victorian Coastal Council, says previous forecasts have significantly underestimated global warming’s effects.
