One of the things that I try to impress on you all in English is that language is both very precise and rich. Many jokes rest on the fact that a phrase can mean different things to different people. Given this it is not surprising that people are very careful and deliberate about their language when trying to win us over.

It’s something to keep in mind when you are trying to win people over yourself.

There is nothing new in politicians saying one thing and meaning another. Many people probably feel it’s part of the job description. However, the science of spin and obfuscation is becoming more sophisticated with each campaign.
