Climate Assignment

31 10 2007

I will not be providing you with any time on the computers in class to complete this assignment.

This assignment is due on Friday 9th of November.

You choose one place on earth to go for a holiday. This will be in a particular country and with a particular climate. You will need to research this information.

Your assignment will have the following sections.

1. Name and location. Provide the longitude and latitude.

2. When. Which month will you be going?

3. Climate information for the that time and place.
How hot and cold will it be there?
How strong is the wind?
How often does it rain?
How much does it rain?
If this is a coastal area when are the tides high and low.

4. What activities will you do there. Name four and explain why they are suitable for that climate.

5. What will you pack? Think of clothes and items for activities (eg. a surfboard)

6. Are there any climate hazards you need to be ready for on this holiday?

You will have noticed that your television screen is one shape and cinema screens are another. There are a number of different aspect ratios and this site explains and shows them.

Grammar of TV and Film

30 10 2007

In class we talked a bit about aspect ratios, types of shots and elements of films. I’ll be posting my notes here later in the week. Until now here is a link to a really detailed site for this information.

The Grammar of TV and Film

Television and film use certain common conventions often referred to as the ‘grammar’ of these audiovisual media. This list includes some of the most important conventions for conveying meaning through particular camera and editing techniques (as well as some of the specialised vocabulary of film production).

Conventions aren’t rules: expert practitioners break them for deliberate effect, which is one of the rare occasions that we become aware of what the convention is.

X-Men Last Stand

30 10 2007

Today in 10.4 English we watched most of X-Men 3: The Last Stand. If you were not in class you will need to watch this in your own time.

This is our film text for this term and you simply will not be able to take part properly if you have not seen the film.

We will be watching it on Wednesday in my 10.1 class.

While I am on the topic there is quite a good Wikipedia entry for this film.

Dog Whistle

29 10 2007

One of the things that I try to impress on you all in English is that language is both very precise and rich. Many jokes rest on the fact that a phrase can mean different things to different people. Given this it is not surprising that people are very careful and deliberate about their language when trying to win us over.

It’s something to keep in mind when you are trying to win people over yourself.

A nod and a wink – FederalElection2007News – FederalElection2007 – theage.com.au

There is nothing new in politicians saying one thing and meaning another. Many people probably feel it’s part of the job description. However, the science of spin and obfuscation is becoming more sophisticated with each campaign.

Green light for $763m channel deepening – National – theage.com.au

THE Brumby Government is ready to give the go-ahead to the controversial $763 million plan to deepen Melbourne’s shipping channels.

But the news will not all be good for the Port of Melbourne Corporation, which has spent more than $114 million trying to push the project through.

The corporation will likely be told that more independent and comprehensive monitoring is needed to minimise environmental damage to the bay.

Such changes are likely to add millions to the already spiralling costs of the project.
