When creating a map you need to remember the following.

Border – this demarcates the map and show what is included and what is not.
Orientation – which way is north? if when it is up on the page you still need to show this.
Legend – maps use symbols; what do symbols on your map mean?
Title – What is this a map of?
Scale – state what scale your map is on. make sure your relative scale is correct.
Source – where is the information from that you used to create this map?

Coloured – maps use colour. blue is only ever used for water and green is commonly used for vegetation.
