The Water Issue
7 11 2006Australians must ignore state borders when they make plans to tackle the nation’s water crisis, Prime Minister John Howard says.
This quote is from an article in The Age in relation to the national summit about water happening right now.
The drought and water usage is interesting in terms of both Geography and Politics. For Geography water is not only an issue physically when it comes to flood and drought but also for society when it comes to things like farming, watering suburban gardens and filling swimming pool. It seems unlikely that future generations will be so free and easy with water as we have been.
Politically this quote in interesting in relation to the power of the Federal Government and State Governments. On the face of it is seems obvious that water is a national issue and not one that stops at state borders. Another things to consider is where we want decisions made and power to be held. Like education and health it seems this federal governments regards this issue as too important to leave it to state governments.
Anyhow it strikes me as a bit interesting not that I water my garden or can swim to save myself.
